Football Pitch Fence Height Guide

General design guidance on planning football pitch fencing and ball containment systems.

Why Football Fence Height Matters

The primary purpose of football fencing is ball containment, protecting players, spectators, and surrounding property. A fence that is too low results in lost balls and potential damage to nearby vehicles or buildings. A fence that is unnecessarily high increases structural engineering costs and visual impact.

Evaluating Pitch Configuration

The required height depends heavily on the type of game being played and the size of the pitch.

Small-Sided Pitches (5-a-side and 7-a-side)

Small-sided games are typically played in a confined space where the ball rebounds frequently. For these pitches, perimeter fencing is often designed higher relative to the pitch size to keep the ball continuously in play. In some urban environments, fully enclosed "cage" systems with a roof net are utilized to guarantee 100% containment.

Full-Size Pitches (11-a-side)

For larger pitches, the perimeter fence (often chain link or welded mesh) serves primarily to define the boundary and control spectator access. However, the areas behind the goals require significantly higher structures to catch errant shots.

Perimeter Fencing vs. Ball-Stop Netting

It is rarely economical or necessary to build rigid steel perimeter fencing to the maximum required containment height. Instead, a hybrid approach is common:

  • Lower Rigid Fencing: A lower, sturdy welded mesh or chain link fence handles spectator control and ground-level impacts.
  • Upper Ball-Stop Netting: Lightweight synthetic netting is suspended above the rigid fence on tall steel masts. This netting absorbs the impact of high balls without the massive structural requirements of full-height rigid steel.

How the Surrounding Environment Affects Design

The location of the facility dictates containment urgency. A pitch located next to a busy highway or fragile glass buildings requires a much taller and more robust containment system than a pitch located in the center of a large open park.

Planning Checklist

  • Assess the proximity of roads, parking lots, and buildings.
  • Determine if the pitch will be used for high-intensity games where powerful shots are frequent.
  • Evaluate local wind loads, as high ball-stop netting acts as a sail and requires appropriately engineered support masts.
  • Consider integrating access gates and player dugouts into the rigid fence design.
