  • Point Loads (Concentrated Loads): Heavy weight applied to a very small area, such as the wheel of a pallet jack or the leg of a heavy machine. A floor might easily handle a high UDL but fail under a severe point load if the decking or secondary joists are not designed for it.

Intended Use Dictates the Engineering

When you commission a mezzanine, the contractor must know its intended use. A floor designed strictly for light foot traffic and office desks will have a significantly different structural profile than a floor designed to hold stacked pallets of dense liquids. Using an office-grade mezzanine for heavy industrial storage is extremely dangerous.

The Role of Structural Support

The load capacity is not just about the floor itself; it also involves the ground beneath it. The concrete slab of the warehouse must be able to bear the point loads transferred down through the mezzanine's columns. In some cases, load distribution plates are required to spread the column weight safely over the concrete.
